TCIFA Strengthens Technical Team With The Addition Of Coach Shavar Thomas
More exciting things are on the horizon for the Turks & Caicos Islands Football Association as recent modifications to its Technical Department promises to become more impactful over time. TCIFA is pleased to announce the recent hiring of Shavar Thomas who joins our technical staff. In addition to playing a role in the coaching of our Grassroots and Elite Youth Players, Coach Thomas will command the position of Assistant Coach of the Turks & Caicos Islands Men’s National Team (MNT). Within this portfolio, Coach Thomas will assist and support Technical Director Andrew Edwards and MNT’s Head Coach Omar Edwards to work on the development curriculums for the MNT training programme. He comes to the TCIFA as a tremendous asset with a wealth of knowledge, experience, and strategy in football, in the midst of the association’s growth phase, to help execute its vision.
Coach Thomas represented the Jamaican National Team as a player and team captain at all levels; that is the Men’s U17, Men’s U20, Men’s U23 and Senior Men’s National Teams. He also played in the 2001 World Youth Cup in Argentina. Thomas played two seasons of college football at the University of Connecticut in 2001-2002 and was named NSCAA second-team All-American within his second year. His playing career has led him to the Kansas City Wizards, Los Angeles Galaxy, Chivas USA, and Fort Lauderdale Strikers, just to name a few.
In the coaching arena, Coach Thomas was the assistant football coach at St. Jago High School in 2012-2014, Head Football Coach at Excelsior High School in 2015-2017, Assistant Football coach at Wolmers Boys School in 2018, and head coach of Portmore United F.C. in 2017-2019, all of which was conducted in Jamaica. Under his leadership, Portmore United F.C. won two consecutive Red-Stripe Premier League titles, and qualified Portmore United FC for the Caribbean Club Championship.
